“Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity” George Patton
The timing of my coaching was perfect for me and for those working around me. My role within our company had involved a lot of working in isolation, delivering governance related projects which required self drive but with little day to day working with others.
My personal vision was and still is to be a successful leader whom others look up to and collectively we deliver to exceed business needs and expectations, whilst enjoying what we do and feeling a sense of personal satisfaction. So I set my own personal challenge to do just that!
As the division has evolved, everyone has had to adapt and diversify, which has meant as many of us as possible at all levels becoming actively involved in revenue generating and cost saving initiatives. At the time many viewed this as an impossible task which didn’t fit well with their administrative job responsibilities.
However, coaching motivated me to take some time out to try and understand others objectives outside of what may be considered their normal areas of responsibility. I realised that these stretching goals were not necessarily being set to test us as individuals for our ability to generate/save money, but more as a tool to help the business exceed its business revenue/profit targets and to ensure that everyone was able to play a part in this.
Coaching prompted me to do exactly what I had written in my personal vision statement.
The result was over 40 of us working together to identify, document, evaluate and deliver several revenue/cost saving ideas, realising total additional revenue generation in excess of £1.2m pa and total cost saving of around £100k pa, at the same time producing 40 highly motivated team members who all exceeded one annual objective….together!
Our next objective is to ‘Work Together’ with other areas of the business to ‘Do It Right’ and ‘Drive For Results’ by ‘Making Great Decisions’
So why not take some time out yourself and think of ways in which you can lead a team to success and help them all to “Stop thinking in terms of limitations and start thinking in terms of possibilities” (Terry Josephson)
